A closer look at the Library reveals a building that is well-loved and a little well-worn. Make Room for Renewal will update shelving, finishes and furniture throughout the Library, adding flexibility and ensuring the space is ready for the next 25 years.

BELOVED GARDENS

Over the last 25 years, the Library’s gardens have become an essential part of the space – a place of games for children, movie nights for teens, quiet reflection for adults.

While renewal efforts will focus on interior renovations at the Library, windows added in the new teen and adult spaces will showcase the gardens and invite more visitors to enjoy their splendor.

LOBBY

The lobby provides a large open space as visitors enter and then move between stacks, meeting rooms and the Friends bookstore. Yet, this space is often under-utilized. There’s no seating for those using Wi-Fi or waiting for a ride. Displays don’t get the attention they deserve as people move in and out.

Library renewal will add comfortable seating and help this area become easier to enjoy.

RARE BOOKS

It’s a well-kept secret, but the Library’s back conference room houses an interesting collection of rare books.

The renewal project will move this unique, historical collection out into a beautiful display case near check-out, protecting these rare materials while allowing everyone to learn more about their role in the history of the printed word.

EXTERIOR

The majority of the renewal will focus on making more room inside the Library. However, the exterior of the building needs updates too.

The past 25 years of weathering has stained the southern face of the Library, and the project will renew the paint and trims back to their original beauty.

RESTROOMS

No one loves to talk restrooms, but they are one more space ready for a Library update.

Bathroom remodels, which add universal design and expand accessibility, offer the greatest return on investment. So, the renewal effort includes funds to widen doorways and modernize the facilities.

DRIVE-UP

Drive-up service became indispensable during the pandemic, but increased activity has highlighted the need to redesign the drive-up window.

Easier access for drivers, as well as improvements for staff at the window, are both part of the renewal effort.
